The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism across the United States. History of the Washoe Zephyr
Mark Twain and the Washoe Zephyr
- Washoe Zephyrs were first named by Mark Twain, of Virginia City, Nevada, who described the furious westerly winds that blow down the eastern Sierra ranges of western Nevada. These mighty gusts, were as Mark Twain described, "a peculiarly scriptural wind, in that no man knoweth whence it cometh".
- Today, Virginia City is impressively preserved, and is the lively center of the Comstock National Historic Landmark District. Thank you NSDAR for supporting the Donovan Mill with a DAR Historic Preservation Grant for new windows. It is also our privilege, here at the Washoe Zephyr Chapter, NSDAR to support Fourth Ward School in Virginia City with annual fundraisers.
History of Washoe Zephyr Chapter, NSDAR
- The idea for Washoe Zephyr Chapter, NSDAR, was born in 1978 when a group of local history enthusiasts came together to discuss the need for a dedicated organization to preserve and share the history of our community. Thanks to their vision and hard work the Washoe Zephyr Chapter, NSDAR, was officially founded in 1980.
- The Washoe Zephyr Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in Virginia City, Nevada on October 12,1991. Meetings are the fourth Saturday of each month, except for June - August. For more information about our chapter and membership, please contact us at the link below.
